    Regarding nutrition during a race, you mention 1 gel a half hour. Would you say that's the same for us slower runners (13-14min per mile pace)?

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane 14 годин тому

      Yep!! I know that ends up being a lot of gels to carry though. Good to practice using what will be on the course...then you can have some on you and take some when it's available. Other rec. I have is to use Tailwind or similar and concentrate it (I do like 3 scoops in 8 oz. which is 75g carbs). This would allow you to get away with eating fewer gels.

    #4 - Pacers: the best and the worst of "times" during some of the longer races that I've run. On the one hand, there's a half-marathon that runs twice a year that's close by to where I live (and work) that I've run three times. The organizers tend to employ the same pacers, and generally keep them within the same pace groups (give or take 15 minutes), and they are some of the most down-to-Earth people I've ever run with; supportive, friendly, and very interesting overall to talk with, on subjects including running and beyond. On the other hand, trying to absolutely keep pace with them is definitely something that I've learned is a no-no; as you said, everyone has a slightly different pace strategy, and over a long distance, the road to that end goal race time may veer slightly from side to side less or more for each runner. I had one of my absolute worst races where I simply joined up in a pace group and tried to follow the two pacers from start to finish - I felt dizzy and was ill by the time that event was over, and I wound up well over ten minutes behind them at the finish line. Now I have a good training schedule, my Garmin watch, and my favorite running shoes, as well as the excellent advice from your channel, (and a couple of others, too), all working for me after much trial and error, and using those tools, I got a P.R. at the last "half" that I ran; no thanks to the pacers that were present (no offense to them, either)! Thanks again, Jane!

      Not surprised you have had both positive and negative experiences. They can absolutely be great and I think if you truly have the right one...on your pace and super encouraging, it can help a lot. The runner just needs to be able to pull away (usually sooner rather than later) if there are signs the pace is not right for them. Thanks for the kind words about the channel - I really appreciate it! I'm curious to know which other channels you really benefit from! Congrats on your recent PR!!

  • @mad_incognito
    @mad_incognito День тому

    My pacing lately is a little bit messed up as I always start to fast for either getting out of a slow group or trying to chase a pacer. That said I am experienced enough to know how much to pull back to rein it in and then being able to maintain a good pace till the end. What was surprising is that shaving off 1h (from my first marathon to now) made the race feel so much faster and way less dreadful. I can remember every section of my first 2 marathons and how far away it felt and now it is all a blur. One thing I had to come to terms with it is that I have to take at least one potty break or two in a full marathon.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane 20 годин тому

      Experience is huge, right?! I think that's another issue with going with a pacer...it's not so much the pacer...it's that people who often use a pacer are just less experienced and rely on them as a guide. But many times people push into too fast of a pace group and puts them in a worse position. And that makes sense about your faster marathon where you had to push the pace more being less dreadful...because you probably managed the effort so well! Taking an hour off is amazing!! Those darn bathroom breaks - wish I had a better solution but can be a nature of the beast.

    Running my first ever full marathon in December. Week 5 of 18 in. Having a hard time figuring out all the fueling needed. I am wanting to do it in 5:45, which means 14 minute mile. My last half was 3:02 which was last November 2023. Is that a good goal or am I aiming to high? Plus every 30 minutes during long runs seems to much for me.

    • @mad_incognito
      @mad_incognito День тому

      When I trained for my first marathon I did a half in 2h20 and raced a 5h13 full marathon. This year (my 4th) I did a 1h50 half and a 4h13 full. So I would guess that 5h45 might be a difficult goal if you do a half in 3h assuming you trained well for the half. That said we are all different and so with a good training plan you might pull it off. Also keep in mind that during the marathon training you train on tired legs and so you will be faster on race day.

    • @landaring
      @landaring День тому

      Going faster in mara than half feels like a really ambitious goal

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      Agree with the other two who commented to you. However, Nov. will have been a year prior, so if you've been running consistently since the half, could be a totally different story if you've gained new fitness in that time. If you can run another half marathon in the next month or two, could be a good opportunity to see where you're at. Also, if you do a run-walk strategy getting that 14-min. goal is probably more attainable as you'll be able to better manage energy. As for fueling every 30 min, keep practicing until you can get down to that. If you're only at every hour right now, for example, push back to every 50 min. for. a couple weeks, then 45 min, etc.

    You hit so many great points here. For my pace, to get up to 20-22 miles, 2.5-3 hours is not enough! Also, my LRs are around 43-45% of my weekly mileage, there is no way I could have my LR be 20-25%, when I'm capping my max week at 50 miles. The Jack Daniels advice is probably fine for faster runners but not for the majority of us. I'm halfway through my training for Chicago and feel great! Setting personal goals, pushing yourself and listening to your body are the most important things IMO. Really appreciate your content 👌🏽

    Just found your channel last week and it is great. But I have to disagree about Daniel's running formula. I follow this program and although I must make some adjustments, it isn't true that the longest run must be 2.5 hours. Actually, the longer run is 2.5 h long plus 4 miles (half on the beginning, half that on the end). Last week I did 2h40 long run. Weekly mileage about 40 miles and my marathon pace would be around 5'40 per km.

    I will be running my first marathon in October this year a week before i hit 65. Have run plenty of half marathons in the last few years in the 1.31 - 1.35 range based purely on training for Ironman 70.3s. My run mileage when training for triathlons was 40 - 50 kilometers a week, with lots of swimming and cycling, however i have decided to cut out most of the bike/swim training and just concentrate on running. Have now been running 80 kilometers a week for the last 6 weeks mostly 80/20 and plan on hitting 100 kilometers a month before the marathon. Am curious what effect being now a pure runner will have on my run form. My run legs definitely feel better after cutting out cycling.Hopefully i will find out come October if cycling has been detrimental for my running! I have not landed on a goal time yet but thought i would test myself and run a half marathon in zone 3.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      I don't think that cycling has negatively impacted your running form. Just likely you are becoming more efficient as you run more. Could you have been running more on tired legs when you had the other modalities and felt that? For sure. Wishing you best of luck in your marathon in October!

    this was the video I needed. I'm trying to run sub 3 hours and did a 1:27 Half Marathon this weekend. The thought of doing another 13.1 miles at the same pace seems impossible right now.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      If you just ran a 1:27 half and you're in the middle of your marathon training block, it's very possible that 3 hours isn't quite attainable just yet. But it depends on your experience, if you're typically stronger at the marathon distance, etc. If you haven't yet run a 3:05 yet, that's probably a better target that your body is ready to handle. Definitely not impossible, but really important to hone in what you're ready for before developing your pacing strategy. Wishing you best of luck!

    Living in Boulder all this worked really well for me. When I look at my old training logs I can see just how much water I took in and what the weather was for every run. I was able to run up to about 97 degrees and up to 18-20 miles on long run days. But I was younger then and Colorado is extremely dry compared to Japan where I live now at age 67. I have not found myself able to sustain even the slowest pace here for more than a half hour when it's above 80 with high humidity without my vest and about 2 liters of water plus a frozen Aquarius that I start sipping as it begins to melt. And yes, then there is chafing. I still get out there but have to have very low expectations for what I will be able to do. Today it's 86 degrees and dew point is 76 degrees. That's a heat index of 96. I'm taking the day off. LOL

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      Yes, high heat and humidity make a huge difference. I know being in CO it's nothing compared to some other places. Definitely all relative to where you typically train. Summer is definitely all about listening to your body and just doing your best...and knowing your body is making impactful adaptations that will help you when it's cooler.

      If you're newer to running, that's normal. Don't worry so much about zone 2 if that's the case and work on building your endurance for how long you can run for. If you are more experienced and this is the case, walk breaks are totally fine to bring down HR and of course heat and hills would also be a factor.

    Love it! Thank you.. For me Z2 is 70-80% of my HRM, and an easy run is somewhere between 60-75% HRM. Also we need to increase our muscular endurance and at the moment I couldn't even walk a marathon distance let alone run one! So I have no problem doing what I call intervals at whatever pace it is. So alongside normal runs, I now also do Z2, Z4, Z5 and sprint intervals in my training plan and love the rests!!! 🙂

    Are faster runners stopping at aide stations to fill water bottles? I’m usually at the back so I don’t see them. Some pacers don’t even stop to drink during half marathons! I can’t run with them!

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      I usually don't fill mine during a race (I bring a handheld and one that fits in my pocket)...but I do take cups of water to supplement. But my old coach, who is faster than me, I know for sure stopped once in one of her marathons to completely fill her water bottle. It really doesn't take that long in the grand scheme.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      Then you need to slow down. 10:00/mile doesn't sound like it's your easy pace. What feels natural/most efficient isn't usually our completely easy pace and it takes practice to slow down.

    Obviously I have no way of proving this but I posit that 80% of instances of hitting the wall are from what was only mentioned closer to the end of the video: running at a pace you can't sustain the whole distance. Fueling is talked about ad nauseum but if were as simple as choking down a couple Gu's we wouldn't hear too much about the wall.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane День тому

      I talk about both ad nauseum, lol, because they are both so dang important. If you pace slow enough, sure, you can avoid the wall without eating anything. But if you want to actually "race" and go for a time, fueling absolutely becomes a factor.

    I never hit the wall that hard but in my 2nd marathon I ran out of steam at mile 14 and all the gains I made I lost (and more) in the rest. This year I had a great breakthrough by going from 4h53 to 4h13 and the race felt so much shorter than the previous 3. That said I was so consumed by the training and the race that now I am mentally burned out and have a hard time going back into fall marathon training. All my long runs even the double 20+ milers this year I never wanted to quit as I knew what needs to be done and so I did it but they were are all tough. Even though I train my long runs with gels every 25min in the marathon at the end (mile 20) I cannot stand them anymore and have to force me to take one but they are further apart (40min).

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane 15 днів тому

      Regarding that last part, yes, I understand this very much! Taking gels late in the marathon is so hard - another big reason the frontloading is so important. I'm sorry you are feeling burnt out. Sounds like you trained really hard for your last one to get that 40-min. PR (awesome job!!) Marathon training is definitely a grind....probably you're ready for a season off, but perhaps you're already signed up for a fall marathon? It's also OK to run one for fun and not do as high level of training.😉

    • @mad_incognito
      @mad_incognito 15 днів тому

      @@runningwithjane Already back in the grind but I think I was too focused on the marathon and with that I needed more time to get back into things. Right now I do a lot of easy running to get the mileage up and use indoor cycling to work on my anaerobic side rather than doing sprint training. The next marathon is in November and my goal is just to run for fun with no particular time goal.

      @MarioatSA 16 днів тому

      @@carina9629 If you are running extremely slowly at mostly aerobic paces then yes. This is why many ultrarunners are able to make that transition. That being said, true marathon pace is simply too fast for your body to not utilize carbs.

    • @carina9629
      @carina9629 16 днів тому

      @@MarioatSA Ohhh ok I see now. Thank you, that makes sense. To actually run the marathon as a race (and not just to finish the distance) fueling is mandatory, not optional. It only becomes optional at slow paces (like for the ultras). But then for ultras you're running for so many miles and for so many hours that you probably want to eat something

    • @sk8qbsk8
      @sk8qbsk8 16 днів тому

      Also, from what I understand, it is not a 100% “on/off” fat vs carb burning system. It gets kind of biochemistry-ish to explain all the details, but even when you are in your optimal fat-burning z2 training zone, you aren’t ONLY burning fat. The process also requires some carb to sustain. I run trail ultras and I can ASSURE you that generally there is MUCH carb consumption, before, during and after these events! 😋🤓 🍉🍌🥨🥞🍛

    I'm about 30lbs overweight, but still very muscular. Broke my ribs last year followed by covid which led to fat gain, and haven't been focused on losing it until recently. I have to use a treadmill and adjust the incline while briskly walking in order maintain my zone 2. Probably going to be like that for a while until I recondition my cardio fitness or until I lose the extra bodyfat lol.

    • @runningwithjane
      @runningwithjane 15 днів тому

      Great job prioritizing your health! Walking on an incline is great for you and yes, that will be zone 2 for people for awhile as they get started on a running journey. Little run bouts - slow for even 30 seconds - will help you increase that aerobic endurance, too (don't worry if your HR goes out of zone 2 for this part). Little by little you'll be able to run for longer and ultimately stay in zone 2 doing it. Stick with it - you should be so proud of yourself!
